Information

The K2 program is for member's 13-14 years of age. Children have moved from the FUNdamental phase of skill development (Nancy Greene) to the more structured Train to Train phase (K1 and K2). The focus of the athletes' attention here is on learning overall, sports specific skills, fun and games. The athletes have entered a more structured environment with formalized training over 10 + months of the year. The children will continue to develop their basic technical skills and should be skiing all events.

These racers have three qualifying races in our one as well as a Provincial final, which in turn coul lead them to the Western Canadian and Canadian National Championships.

Dryland Training - This is what we call our off snow physical training. K2'S have moved through the stage of Multiple sport involvement where they have learned how to run, jump, throw and kick. Although athletes of the K2 age will begin to increase ski specific training, some of the best Cross over sports for skiing remain track and field, soccer, gymnastics and martial arts. Formalized dryland training for athletes at this level starts the first week of September, but many athletes will follow programs for 12 months of the year. We will also attempt to have 1 to 2 dryland camps over the summer months. Please watch website, call coach, or coordinator for details, YOU MUST TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY FOR ENSURING YOU ARE WELL INFORMED.

Summer Camps (on snow) - It is recommended that athletes at the K2 level attend at least 2 summer and 1to 2 fall on snow ski camp. Our fall Apex camp will occur yearly around the middle of November and we will run summer camps at the end of June / start of July at Blackcomb, watch for details.

Winter (on snow) Training - Training will be available on Mt Washington every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Fridays and Mondays must be arranged in advance with Coach/Head Coach. Most K2's will train to 3+ days per week. Training will be split between freeskiing (35%), drills and exercises (30%), race simulation (20%) and competition (15%) percentages are approximations. The ratio between training and racing will be kept around 4:1.

Equipment Needs - K2 athletes should have a Giant Slalom and Slalom ski, some athletes will require at least the use of Super G/speed ski's. Please follow coach's guidelines with regard to all equipment needs as in this case Coaches (not parents) know best. In general, ski's should be kept short, shapely and soft. Boots should have soft forward flex and be stiffer laterally and aft. Binding retention and performance is more important than release.

Protective gear is very important at this level, athletes will be skiing gates and in order to allow them to ski them correctly without fear of pain they need the proper leg , hand and arm protection. Ski tuning equipment is necessary as athletes have to maintain equipment so as to aid not diminish skill acquisition/performance.

Tuning equipment:

  • File guide 2 degree
  • Files
  • Vises for every 2 or 3 athletes
  • Basic hydrocarbon waxes
  • Iron, small and collapsible, Canadian Tire
  • Soft and hard stones
  • Diamond stone(s)
  • Tool box to carry it all.

Please do ski's with athletes, not for them, as they will need to do them when at races.

We will also show you and kids how ski's should be done or check out this link. This program is for skiers who want accelerated training. K-2 start the first week of September 2001 with dryland training. On snow training will begin as soon as possible every Saturday and Sunday including Christmas holidays and Spring Break. Training is also available on Mondays and Fridays, parents and school permitting. This program seeks to develop skiinq and life skills in a fun, safe environment. These racers have three qualifying races in our zone from which they can strive to qualify for the B.C. Championships (both in Technical and Speed). This in turn could lead them to the Western Canadian and Canadian National Championships.
