Nancy Greene Ski League

Home

This program is for children 4 - 10 years of age. Children of 11 and 12 years of age can be accommodated by the Nancy Greene program if they are not ready for the Kinder level. This year we have introduced a half-day program for new racers joining our program, aged 4-5.

The philosophy:
The Nancy Greene Ski league is to encourage participation, interaction and the development of technical skills in an exciting and motivating atmosphere without the pressures of intense competition. Skiers are grouped by ability with consideration to age and led by professional coaches. Coaches follow the Alpine Canada "Snow Stars program" - a seven step skills progression specially designed for children of this age and Huskey Skill Awards program.

K Stars Program

The K-Stars program is for member's 9-11 years of age and as such the program still falls under the FUNdamental phase of skill development and is part of Nancy Greene. This Nancy Greene program is meant to give our future K1's the necessary skills and challenges to bridge the gap between the Fundamental phase of development and the more competitive Training to Train phase of K1/K2. The focus of the athletes' attention here remains fixed on basic technical skills and on learning overall, sports specific skills, fun and games.

Dryland Training - This is what we call our off snow physical training. K-Stars should be focusing on multiple sport involvement and learning how to run, jump, throw and kick. Some of the best cross over sports for skiing are track and field, soccer, gymnastics and martial arts. There is no formalized dryland training for athletes at this level.

Summer (on snow) Training - It is recommended that athletes at the K stars level who will move into K1 the following season (11 before January) attend at least 1 summer and 1 fall on snow ski camp. Our fall camp will occur yearly around the middle of November and we will run a summer camp in May/June and one in July at Blackcomb, watch for details.

Winter (on snow) Training - Training will be available on Mt Washington every Saturday and Sunday. Training is also available over the Christmas Holidays as well as spring break, following the same schedule as the K level athletes. Training will be split between freeskiing (40%), drills and exercises 40%) and race simulation/competition (20%). Percentages are approximations. The ratio between training and racing will be kept around 5:1.

Equipment Needs - K-Stars are encouraged to have a newer set of junior race or coach suggested ski's. Please follow coach's guidelines about equipment they know best. In general, ski's should be kept short, shapely and soft. Boots should have soft forward flex and be stiffer laterally and aft. Binding retention and performance is becoming more important than release.
Protective gear is not very important at this level, athletes gate training will mainly be focused in stubbies and marker gates, such equipment allows the athletes to become accustomed to skiing properly as opposed to hitting gates.

Ski tuning equipment is necessary, as athletes have to maintain equipment to aid in, not diminish skill acquisition/performance. Skis should be kept sharp!

Tuning equipment:

Please do ski's with athletes, not for them, as they will need to do them when at races. We will show you and kids how skis should be done.

SNOW STARS

Snow Stars is Alpine Canada Alpin’s (ACA) skill development program for young skiers. This seven-step program outlines the key skills required for children to progress from the beginner to athletic skier and eventually to learn the basic tactical skills needed for a ski racer. The goal of Snow Stars is to encourage the development of skiers and ski racers of all ability levels in a fun and rewarding environment. The program provides the necessary information to ensure that skiing skills are developed and refined in proper sequence, according to the "FUNdamentals" and "Train To Train" phases in ACA’s Alpine Integrated Model (AIM). Each level identifies various skill related goals and provides a means to measure the skill acquisition of each child. The system assesses children on a Bronze, (Sometimes), Silver (Often) and Gold (Always) scale.
